Youth Climbing Team

The 2013 youth climbing team in Minneapolis at a competition

Climbing Team is a unique experience that will allow your kids to come into their own as an independent, responsible, strong, and respectful climberers. Climbing Team's goal is to create better climbers socially, mentally, and physically. We believe that children learn best by climbing with other children who must deal with the same challenges they encounter, both on the wall and in their daily lives. Climbing Team is not a summer camps or a day care service. It is a place where young climbers work hard and practice their art. We are a team because no climber can do this alone.

Climbing Team is geared towards intermediate and advanced climbers and is open to kids who have gone through the climbing club and demonstrated an appropriate level of knoweldge by 'graduating'. Kids who haven't gone through climbing club are also eligible to be part of the team if they can pass a preliminary exam that involves

  • Ability to climb at least one intermediate route (all ages)
  • Mastery of the basic figure8 knot used for tieing in (all ages)
  • Knowledge of gym safety protocol/climbing commands (all ages)
  • Mastery of top rope belay techniques (ages 11 and older)

Climbing Team is divided up into fall and spring sessions. The fall season is essentially 'off season' training. We will focus primarily on developing skills and strength in advance of the spring competition season. The spring session will be geared towards peaking climbing fitness around several optional competitions throughout the region. Both sessions will involve weekly practices during which coaches will work with team members to maximize strengths, overcome weaknesses, improve techniques, and push limits. Team members should come to practices prepared (and eager!) to work hard. Team Members will be held to high expectations both in terms of their dedication to their craft and their contribution to creating a supportive environment that helps further advance the goals of the team.

  • Registration is limited to previous team members or by application/tryouts. To enquire about being invited onto team, please email us!
